A fourth member of the Brazilian delegation at the UN tests positive for coronavirus

The president of the public bank Caixa Económica Federal de Brazil, Pedro Guimaraes, tested positive for coronavirus this Sunday, which is why he joins three other members of the Brazilian delegation who traveled to the United Nations to contract the virus.

Guimaraes, who had already completed the complete vaccination schedule, reported through his social networks that he performed the test this morning and is asymptomatic, but will remain in social isolation, as required by the country’s medical protocol.

“I have no symptoms and I will continue working from home,” he said in a video uploaded to his Instagram account.

Guimaraes’ positive is the fourth infection by the coronavirus among the Brazilian delegation headed by the president, Jair Bolsonaro – who has not yet been vaccinated against the pathogen – who traveled to New York for a series of events and meetings in the General Assembly of the ONU.

The president of la Caixa thus joins three other members of the official delegation to contract the virus: a diplomat whose identity was not disclosed; the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, who remains in quarantine in New York, and the third of Bolsonaro’s children, Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro.

Also this Sunday, the president, leader of the Brazilian extreme right and one of the world’s most denialists in the face of the pandemic, announced that he tested negative for covid-19, which already leaves more than 594,000 dead and 21.3 million infected in the country.

Three other ministers who accompanied Bolsonaro to the United Nations, as well as the first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, also reported today that their results have been negative.

With some 213 million inhabitants, Brazil is one of the three countries most affected by the pandemic, next to the United States and India.
