Santiago Peña asks Lula that Unasur is not an “ideological” space

The elected president of ParaguayanSantiago Peña, affirmed this Friday that the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) should not be a “space of ideology”, after a meeting with the Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvain Brasília.

“We talked about the importance of Unasur not being a space of ideology, but of integration”he declared in a press conference after the meeting.

Peña indicated his willingness to “restore relations” with Venezuela and of “try to be a voice for all Venezuelans who are asking for elections and defending human rights”.

Unasur, an intergovernmental organization made up of eight countries, was founded in 2008 with the support of several leftist leaders, including Lula and the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.

Because of their association with the left, the right-wing governments of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil and Mauricio Macri in Argentina decided to remove their countries from the organization in 2019.

After his re-election, Lula announced that Brazil was rejoining Unasur, at the same time as the Argentine leader Alberto Fernández did.

Asked for his opinion on the situation in Venezuela, Lula recently said in an interview that the concept of democracy was “relative”some statements that created controversy and were criticized by the opposition.
