Several workers on Tuesday removed the hammer and sickle from a giant statue in the Ukrainian capital, kyivas part of a campaign to remove the symbols of the old Soviet Union.

The steel sculpture, 62 meters high and placed on a 40-meter pedestal, represents a woman wielding a sword with one hand and a shield with a hammer and sickle in the other.

The monument, known in Ukrainian as Batkivshchyna Maty (“mother of the country”), was erected in 1981 in memory of the soviet victory in the Second World War.

The project, with a cost of more than 1.6 million dollars aroused criticism in Ukrainewhich needs a lot of resources for the conflict that broke out after the russian invasion of the country in February 2022.

However, the Ukrainian authorities ensure that no public money will be spent. The Minister of Culture, Oleksandr Tkatchenkowhich supported the project, resigned in July following criticism over the use of public funds for cultural projects.
