The Government of Ortega dissolves the Society of Jesus of Nicaragua and confiscates its assets

The Nicaraguan government, chaired by the former Sandinista guerrilla Daniel Ortegacanceled this Wednesday the legal status of the Society of Jesus Association of Nicaraguabetter known as the jesuitsand ordered the expropriation of his assets, which include a university and two private schools.

The dissolution of the Society of Jesus Association of Nicaraguaregistered since May 16, 1995, was approved by the Nicaraguan Minister of the Interior, Maria Amelia Colonel Kinlochaccording to the ministerial agreement published in the Official Gazette La Gaceta.

The ministerial agreement is given a week after the Nicaraguan Justicecontrolled by the Sandinistas, will freeze the bank accounts and immobilize the properties of the Jesuit Centroamerican University (ACU), one of the most prestigious private study centers in the Central American country, after being accused of crimes of terrorism.

The ACUconsidered one of the last bastions of freedom of thought in Nicaraguarejected the “unfounded accusations” from the authorities, and decided to suspend its academic and administrative activities.

“We are pastors, teachers and chaplains. We are also doctors, lawyers and astronomers, among many other functions in the Church and society. In the variety of our ministries, we attend to the whole person: body, mind and soul. And especially in our ministries of education, we seek to nurture ‘men and women for others’”.

In the ministerial agreement of this Wednesday, the Ministry of the Interior maintained that the Society of Jesus Association of Nicaragua was outlawed bybreach of laws”, because its board of directors had expired since March 27, 2020 and they did not report their financial statements for the fiscal period between 2020 and 2022.

Government accused her of hindering “the control and surveillance of the General Directorate of Registration and Control of Non-Profit Organizations of that portfolio, of not promoting transparency policies in the administration and management of the Association, and that the regulatory body was unaware “the activities they carry out, the execution of their projects and if these are in accordance with their objectives and purposes”.

On the liquidation of the body’s assets, which includes private schools loyola and Central Americathe Interior explained that it will correspond to the Attorney General of the Republic carry out the transfer of movable or immovable property in the name of the Nicaraguan State.

The relations of the Government of President Ortega and the Catholic Church are experiencing moments of great tension, marked by the expulsion and imprisonment of priests, the prohibition of religious activities, and the suspension of their diplomatic relations.

Pope Francis called it “rude dictatorship” to the Sandinista government in an interview with Infobae, pointing out “an imbalance of the person who leads” the Central American country.
