Brazilian Prosecutor’s Office asks Bolsonaro to return all the gifts received during his administration

The Federal Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office) asked this Monday the Court of Accounts of the Union (TCU), the supervisory body attached to Congress, that the former president Jair Bolsonaro return all gifts received during your tenure.

The prosecutor’s request Lucas Rocha Furtado occurs in the midst of the scandal in which Bolsonaro, his wife Michelle and six relatives have had to testify before the Federal police about an alleged attempt to misappropriate some jewelry.

The jewels were given to Bolsonaro in Arab countries when he was still in power and now the Prosecutor’s Office wants all gifts received on official trips abroad by foreign authorities to be returned by the former president.

The Prosecutor’s Office compiled press clippings showing Bolsonaro receiving gifts, such as watches, gold-plated sculptures, a samurai helmet, a painting of the Temple of Solomon in Israel and a model of the Taj Mahal in marble, among others.

For the prosecutor, as reported by the state news service Agencia Brasil, these gifts should be incorporated into public assets because they were received during Bolsonaro’s term (2019-2022).

The recent controversial case refers to a set of jewels and objects of great value that the far-right leader received on official trips to Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries and which he should have handed over to the State archives upon leaving office.

According to the investigations, Bolsonaro sold some of these jewels through intermediaries, although some of his collaborators bought them back once the State demanded their return.

According to Justice, the matter could involve an attempt to misappropriate public property, a hypothesis that Bolsonaro has emphatically denied in previous statements on the case.

In addition to Bolsonaro and his wife – who remained silent during the police interrogation – the former deputy lieutenant colonel of the Presidency has been summoned Mauro Cid and the former head of government communication fabio wajngarten.

Also the lawyer Frederick WassefThe general Mauro Lorraine Cidfather of the former dean, and two advisers to Bolsonaro: Marcelo Camara and Osmar Crivellati.

Everyone, according to suspicions, could have participated in the sale of some of these jewels, which the lawyer Wassef repurchased after the State demanded their return, last January, when the progressive Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaassumed power.

In the request on Monday, the prosecutor indicated that an opposition senator denounced a similar case of the current president Lula, about a luxury watch received from the former French president. Jacques Chirac and that it was not returned when he left power (2003-2010).

Rocha Furtado, in his opinion, indicated that Lula can use that watch while he is in his current term, his third, but that he will have to return it when he is no longer in charge of the Executive branch.
