Ebrard demands the cancellation of Sheinbaum’s official candidacy for presidency of Mexico

The former chancellor Marcelo Ebrard demanded this Monday to annul the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as candidate of the left-wing ruling party to the presidency of Mexico in 2024under penalty of leaving the governing party.

After winning five polls, Sheinbaum won the nomination for Brunettepresident’s party Andrés Manuel López Obradorbut Ebrard, second in those polls, ignored their validity, alleging irregularities.

If those different circumstances that occurred (…) remain the same, I would no longer have interest in being in Morena“, warned the former minister in a statement to the press, one day after presenting a demand for annulment and repetition of the process before a party ethics committee.

The former official also mentioned the possibility of running for president with his own political movement, which would be launched on September 18.

Sheinbaum, former mayor of Mexico City 61 years old, dismissed the claim.

We reviewed the challenge, it does not have much basis“, said the candidate to the television station Milenio, and announced that the complaint will be answered “juridically”. Furthermore, he maintained that the differences with Ebrard do not imply a partisan break.

In any case, although Ebrard’s rebellion has already opened a fissure, his eventual departure from Morena would have a limited impact, according to analysts.

The former chancellor, 63, denounced this Monday that those responsible for organizing the consultations promoted Sheinbaum, who – according to him – also benefited from the use of public resources and received privileged information about the places where the surveys would be carried out to deploy propaganda.

It also refers to the coercion of respondents through “threats, violence and intimidation“, according to the annulment appeal partially disseminated by local media such as Aristegui Noticias.

No risk of schism

Sheinbaum, who will compete for the presidency with the opposition senator of indigenous roots Xochitl Galvezwon the polls by between 10 and 15 percentage points, and his favoritism was anticipated by other polls.

It will be the first time that two women will compete for the presidency of Mexico, a country with a long sexist tradition and hard hit by gender violence. Four other candidates participated in the consultation process for Morena, the favorite to govern for six more years.

The former mayor, seen from the beginning as the favorite of the popular López Obrador, once again extended an olive branch to Ebrard this Monday. “Here the doors are still open for him to return”, he stated.

For analysts like Pablo Majlufthe former candidate faces a crossroads, since his complaints are difficult to prove and the results of the surveys are conclusive.

The eventual defection of Ebrard would not cause a “cleavage” in Morena where, according to press estimates, he is supported by about 80 deputies of the 275 that make up the official alliance, who condition their support to “the chances of success you have in your rebellion”Majluf maintains.

López Obrador has said that he trusts that his former minister, whom he often calls “brother” and “friend”, finally decided to support the continuity of the “transformation”.
