Three reporters injured after shooting in Mexican state of Guerrero

Three journalists from the Mexican state of Warrior (south) were shot this Tuesday when they returned from covering an incident of violence in Chilpancingocapital of the entity, informed the local Public Ministry.

The attack occurred at around 12:00 local time (18:00 GMT), when reporters were traveling by car near a military barracks in the said city, the official added.

The attackers were on a motorcycle and shot at the journalists who were injured, according to a report from the Public Ministry.

The journalists attacked are Jesus Anthony of the Crosswho has a wound on his back; Oscar Guerrerowho suffered an injury to his left arm, and Victor Mateus Franciscowith a neck wound, the department detailed.

After the attack, the health status of the communicators is reported “stable“, according to the journalists’ advocacy organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

We ask the authorities in Guerrero to investigate the events and provide the necessary security for them and their families.”added RSF on its X (formerly Twitter) account.

The three journalists are dedicated to covering political and police stories for different local media outlets, RSF detailed.

The attack comes after three other reporters were kidnapped last week and later released in the city of Taxalso in Warriora state hit by violence linked to organized crime.

Sergio Ocampomember of Association of Journalists from the State of Guerrero and collaborator of the AFP, called on the authorities to stop “these attacks on freedom of expression”.

Warrior “It has become the state where it is most difficult to practice journalism (…) there are silenced areas where no one wants to go out and report anymore“, he warned after ensuring that many of the communicators in that region, one of the poorest in the country, “They have very low salaries”.

Mexico It is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for practicing journalism, according to several organizations that protect reporters.

On November 16th, the photojournalist from El Heraldo de Juárez Ismael Villagomezwas shot dead at the border City Juarez (north). So far there are three people arrested for the murder.

At least five other journalists were murdered in Mexico in 2023, according to RSF. Authorities are investigating whether these events are related to his reporting work.
