Yemen’s Houthi rebels said they were acting in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli army is waging a war against the Islamist Hamas movement. On Tuesday they claimed responsibility for a rocket attack in the Red Sea that hit a Norwegian-flagged oil tanker the day before. Shortly after, the French army said it had shot down a drone that threatened the tanker.
The multi-role frigate (FREMM) Languedoc “intercepted and destroyed a drone directly threatening the Strinde” and then “came under the protection of the affected building, preventing an attempt to hijack the ship,” the ministry press release added.
The US Army announced Monday evening that a missile fired from Houthi-controlled areas struck a tanker off the coast of Yemen without causing any casualties. This incident was confirmed by the Norwegian shipowner J. Ludwig Mowinkels Rederi.
