Chinese president assures that reunification with Taiwan “will come true”

President chino Xi Jinping He said in Beijing on Saturday that reunification with Taiwan “will become a reality” and said that his interest was to achieve it by “peaceful means” despite increasing military pressure on the island.

In a speech on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution, which overthrew the last Chinese dynasty, Xi stated that “the complete reunification of the country will and can be achieved.”

The words come at a time of tension with Taiwan, self-governed since December 1949, which in the last week recorded the record of about 150 Chinese military aircraft incursions into its airspace.

“Achieving the reunification of the homeland by peaceful means is in the general interest of the Chinese nation, including fellow Taiwan compatriots,” said Xi Jinping at the immense Beijing People’s Palace before a portrait of Sun Yat-sen, the ephemeral first President of the ROC in 1911.

Despite their rivalry, both Beijing and Taipei endorse that revolution. In the case of Taiwan, managed autonomously since the defeat of the Nationalists against the Communists on the mainland in 1949, the celebration is on Sunday.

China regards Taiwan as its province and threatens to resort to force in the event of a formal proclamation of the island’s independence.

Diplomatic, military and economic pressure on Taipei has increased since the 2016 election of President Tsai Ing-wen, who views the island as de facto sovereign.

The Chinese president also warned against external interference in the Taiwan issue, which “is a purely internal matter for China,” he stressed.

On Friday, the United States acknowledged that it was quietly training the Taiwanese military for months. In addition, this week a delegation of French politicians visited the island despite Beijing’s anger.

“No one should underestimate the strong determination … of the Chinese people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Xi warned.
