The Age of the President: The Great American Misunderstanding

The age of 81-year-old Joe Biden has been the subject of US presidential debates for months. In New York, where few still dare to talk about politics, it is a whisper of conversation and a near consensus: the president will be too old for a second term. Surprisingly, the age of Donald Trump, who is only four years younger, is rarely mentioned and never criticized as much.

This question of age is based on a misunderstanding that may affect the future of the United States and democracy in general: the importance Americans place on a leader’s eloquence, the “sweet talk,” and the importance they place on the choices he makes. This misunderstanding is based mainly on an error of judgment or, even more so, on a certain misunderstanding of the role of the president. It is decisions that make history and influence our lives much more than speeches. Unfortunately, speeches are the only thing American media is allowed to film.
