Argentina: soldiers arrive in Rosario for logistical support in the fight against drug trafficking

According to the Undersecretary for Federal Intervention of the Ministry of National Security, Federico Angelini, “logistical support for greater coverage and presence is very important, so that neighbors see and feel safer and that when criminals leave their houses and see if we are there.”

The military vehicles arrived at around 12:30 pm local time (15:30 GMT) at the Güemes detachment of the National Gendarmerie in Rosário and, according to the authorities present, this presence will soon be complemented by helicopters, trucks and drones.

These troops are the first of the Armed forces in addition to the 100 police officers who arrived the day before and the 450 who arrived between Monday and Tuesday, all members of the federal forces deployed by the Argentine Ministry of Security for the operation to combat the drug trafficking.

In turn, the mayor of Rosario, Pablo Javkin, highlighted that the authorities are in a “battle to achieve normality”, because the gangs sought to “instill terror” with their latest actions.

Javkin commented that, in addition to the murder of two taxi drivers, a bus driver and a gas station employee, there were “telephone threats and attempts to disrupt school activities.”

Despite the security device, one of the complaints from citizens in recent days was the scarce police presence on the streets, following the announcement made on Monday by the minister, Patricia Bullrichaccompanied by the head of Defense, Luis Petri, and the governor of Santa Fé, Maxi Pullaro.

Angelini justified this Thursday that “you will not see (on the streets) a police officer, a mayor, a federal police officer with a helmet just to see him”, as he argued: “We came to Rosario to pacify, so that the Rosario people can be better”.

The mayor of Rosário highlighted the work of the unified crisis committee, which includes the three levels of Administration (national, provincial, local) and recalled that, given the current situation, Governor Pullaro “is installed in the city”.

However, he did not want to take stock of the situation because, he said, “this is everyday life and there are many things at the same time”.

Rosario, the third most populous city in Argentina, has been plagued by violence associated with drug trafficking for several years. In recent weeks, in retaliation for the prison protocol that imitates the “Bukele style”, the city has recorded several murders of citizens with no links to organized crime.
