He added that the Government headed by Xiomara Castro has communicated with Suazo’s family in Honduras and that there is an official willingness to repatriate his remains, if his family so decides.

Suazo, 39, was from Azacualpa, Santa Bárbara department in western Honduras, and had lived in the United States for 18 years, García said.

He also said that the company where Suazo worked contacted his family after the accident.

So far, only the death of Honduran Maynor Suazo and two Guatemalans has been confirmed, a 26-year-old man from San Luis (Petén) and a 35-year-old man from Camotán (Chiquimula), as announced by the Guatemalan newspaper Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Mexican consulate is also trying to verify whether there are Mexican citizens among the victims.

The accident occurred around 01:30 local time (05:30 GMT), and according to the first indications, the Dali freighter lost propulsion and ended up stuck on the bridge built in 1977, where around 35,000 vehicles pass per day. It achieved fame in the past as the setting for the series “The Wire”.

The alert given by the ship itself made it possible to block vehicles from entering the area and save lives, but there were workers on site who were carrying out repairs on the asphalt: two were injured, one of them seriously, and six others are still missing, as reported in Baltimore.
