War in Ukraine: new Russian bombing of infrastructure

Russian strikes again targeted Ukrainian infrastructure overnight on Saturday and Sunday, killing at least one person in the Lvov region, Ukrainian authorities said, saying they had shot down nine missiles and nine drones.

In the Lviv region, “the enemy attacked with cruise missiles the same important infrastructure facilities (…) that were attacked on March 24 and 29. The administrative building was damaged,” said Governor Maxim Kozitsky. “As a result of the attack, a man died (…). Rescuers are clearing the rubble. There could be other people under it,” he added, without specifying what type of infrastructure was damaged.

The Russian army said in its daily report on Sunday that it had targeted electricity, gas and infrastructure linked to Ukrainian military industries with missiles and drones. Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force said that during night strikes it shot down nine cruise missiles and nine Russian Shahed high-explosive drones.

Attacks on energy infrastructure

“There is not a night or a day without Russian terror again trying to destroy our lives,” President Vladimir Zelensky condemned on Sunday.

Ukrainian operator Ukrenergo confirmed that Russian forces primarily attacked “high-voltage substations (…) in the southern regions.” Due to the damage, power outages were imposed for about an hour and a half in two districts of Odessa and one district of the region, and then were lifted, the operator said at noon Sunday.

Ukrenergo reported that the restrictions imposed in other regions due to strikes have been lifted, but can be restored during peak hours in the evening for consumers in the Odessa and Kharkov regions, as well as for enterprises in the city of Krivoy Rog.

Ukrainian forces said two Russian missiles hit an agricultural enterprise in the Kherson region and there were no civilian casualties.

More than 1500 shots in 24 hours

Over the past 24 hours, more than 1,500 rounds of Russian artillery also struck 14 towns in the Donetsk region, killing at least two civilians and wounding five, Ukrainian police said on Sunday. In Borovaya, Kharkov region, as a result of strikes on Saturday evening and at night, a 19-year-old man was killed, two more were injured in Kharkov, the regional governor said.

In recent weeks, Moscow has stepped up its airstrikes on Ukraine, particularly on its energy grid, ensuring it is responding to Kyiv’s attacks in border regions.

The governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine and is under almost daily shelling, announced Sunday afternoon that a Ukrainian bombing in the village of Dunayka had killed a woman.

Russia carried out massive explosions in Ukraine’s power grid on Friday, severely damaging at least three thermal power plants and prompting authorities to impose emergency shutdowns in seven regions. Kyiv is asking its Western allies to send it more aid, particularly air defense systems.
