Under threat, the princess-heir to the throne in the Netherlands had to live in Madrid for more than a year

Her safety is at stake. Dutch Crown Princess Amalia was living in Spain to avoid threats, local media reported, as she prepared to make her official debut during a state visit to the Netherlands on Wednesday. As reported by NOS, citing royal sources, the 20-year-old boy lived and studied in Madrid for more than a year.

In October 2022, Amalia was forced to abandon her plans to live in student accommodation in the Dutch capital due to safety fears, just weeks after she began studying politics, psychology, law and economics at the University of Amsterdam. The heir to the throne was photographed beaming as she began her studies. She indicated that she was considering living in student housing.

“Huge consequences for his life”

But about a month later, the royal couple said their daughter had been forced to return to live at the palace in The Hague, with significantly increased security measures. “She cannot live in Amsterdam and cannot leave the house (…) This has huge consequences for her life,” said a moved Queen Maxima at the time.

Authorities did not release details, but the statement came weeks after reports that Amalia and Prime Minister Mark Rutte were mentioned in communications from organized crime gangs, raising fears of kidnapping attempts.

NOS reported that the threat to Amalia had not completely disappeared, but she was able to live and study in the Netherlands again thanks to undisclosed “measures.” Now she will live in Amsterdam. This Wednesday, Amalia will play an official role for the first time during a two-day state visit by the Spanish royal family.
