Petro guarantees that a coup d’état is being prepared against him and appeals for popular support

The Colombian president, Gustavo PedroHe insisted this Wednesday that his opponents are trying to remove him from power through a coup d’état and assured that if that happens the people will take to the streets to defend democracy.

“If they are going to attempt a coup, they will face the people in the streets. If they attempt a coup d’état against the popular will, as they did on April 19, 1970 (the day on which alleged electoral fraud inspired the birth of the guerrillas in M-19to which he belonged), the people in the streets will defend democracy and the popular will“he said in a long speech at the Bolivar Squareon the occasion of Work day.

“You gotta make sure, stop the scam they’re cooking,” he insisted.

Petro, who has been talking for months about the possibility of a “soft stroke“against him, he stated the alleged coup”It’s not with the tanks in the presidential palace”but accusing him of exceeding electoral spending limits in the 2022 elections that brought him to power.

Just last Monday Investigative Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia opened an investigation against the 20 senators of the Historical Pactleft-wing coalition of which Petro is part, due to alleged irregularities committed during the campaign in which parliamentarians were elected in 2022.

On the other hand, the president defended his proposals for change and insisted that it is essential to advance health, pension and labor reforms, which is why he called on his ministers to promote these initiatives in Congress without fear.

“Minister who is afraid to step aside and let someone else do it. As far as possible, we must advance as long as we have the people, we must not fear anything“, he warned.
