The 84-year-old businessman, who had been arrested in 2019 at the Sydney International Airport, must spend at least seven months of his sentence before requesting bail, according to the ruling of Judge Sarah Huggett of a local court of the Australian state of New South Wales, according to the News.com.au portal.

The judge justified her prison sentence by the fact that the images “describe the sexual assault or abuse of two girls and the fact that the crime was motivated by sexual interest and gratification ”, among other reasons.

The former head of the Bank of New Zealand, who faced a maximum penalty of ten years in prison, pleaded guilty last April to three counts of possession of thousands of images of child sexual abuse on his laptop and other devices that he had in his luggage at the time of his arrest, as well as in his Sydney mansion.

Brierley had held the highest executive positions in companies in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, including Brierley Investments Ltd (BIL), which was considered in the 1980s as one of the largest companies in its home country.

The businessman, who also owned shares in hundreds of international companies such as Air New Zealand and the French Galleries Lafayette warehouses, was stripped last April of his knighthood granted by the Wellington Executive as a result of these accusations.
