Ukraine: Kamala Harris announces more than $1.5 billion in new aid

US Vice President Kamala Harris announced more than $1.5 billion in new aid to Ukraine on Saturday, mainly for its energy sector and humanitarian aid.

Kamala Harris, attending a two-day peace summit at the luxury mountain resort of Burgenstock in Switzerland, said the aid included $500 million in new funds for energy assistance.

The Ukraine peace summit, which begins this Saturday with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and representatives of about 90 countries, shows restrained ambitions in the absence of Russia and China and is intended to be the first step towards peace. “Together we are taking the first step towards a just world based on the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of international law,” the Ukrainian president said in the X program.

Guests at the summit, which is taking place in Switzerland, “come from all continents and regions of the world, representing different points of view, but united by respect for international law and others,” he emphasized.

Zelensky condemned the “Hitler-style” “ultimatum”

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin loudly entered the conversation, demanding Ukraine’s de facto capitulation before any negotiations. “We do not need a dictated peace, but a fair and equitable peace that takes into account the integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz retorted on Saturday on ARD after the United States’ condemnation. Vladimir Zelensky then denounced the Russian president’s “Hitlerite” style “ultimatum.”

Emmanuel Macron will take part in the summit on Saturday along with other heads of state and government of the G7 countries (Germany, Canada, Italy, Japan, Great Britain).
