Czech Republic: Explosion kills soldier and wounds eight others at training camp

A soldier was killed and eight others were injured Monday in an explosion at a training ground used by the Czech army to train Ukrainian troops, the Czech army and a local hospital said.

The explosion occurred around 10 a.m. GMT (noon in Paris) at the Libau military training area near Olomouc, about 200 kilometers east of Prague. “A soldier died as a result of an explosion at the Libau military training ground,” the Czech army reported on X.

“Planned training” for mine clearance

“Seven other soldiers and a civilian employee were taken to military and university hospitals in Olomouc,” the army added. It is at the Libau training camp that the Czech army trains Ukrainian soldiers after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Military police spokeswoman Katerina Mlynkova told AFP that the wounded “were not foreigners.” The Czech Army reported on X that “the ammunition exploded” during “routine clearance training”, adding that the soldier was killed instantly. The military police are investigating the incident and have opened a criminal case,” the Ministry of Defense said.
