Coronavirus Argentina: the mask in public spaces is no longer mandatory in Buenos Aires

The use of the mask outdoors was no longer mandatory this Wednesday in Buenos Aires, due to the “favorable” evolution of the pandemic in the capital and the advance of vaccination with two doses, which has already reached 70% of the population.

This was announced on Tuesday by the head of the Buenos Aires Government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, who clarified that the mask continues to be mandatory in closed spaces and where there are crowds of people.

“We always make decisions based on data and evidence. Now, I ask that we continue to take care of ourselves and continue to wear the mask when necessary ”, assured the capital’s mayor in a press conference.

In the last week, Buenos Aires registered an average of 142 daily infections, while the occupation of intensive care beds for covid patients is at “its historic floor”, just 3.2%, said the head of the Buenos Aires Executive.

Likewise, vaccination has advanced at a good pace: according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, a total of 2,119,029 Buenos Aires have two doses of the vaccine, a figure equivalent to 70% of the capital’s population.

For this reason, from this Wednesday public transport also ceases to have maximum capacities in the capital and it will not be mandatory to take the temperature when entering closed spaces.

“All these measures are possible thanks to the effort and commitment of the entire society, which for many months maintained care and during this time came to be vaccinated, to leave the pandemic behind and to dream again in the future”, asserted Rodríguez Larreta.

These measures come three weeks after the Argentine government decreed the end of the mandatory use of the mask in public spaces, as part of a “plan of opening, progressive and careful activities” in the South American country.

The culmination of that plan will be on November 1, when Argentina will open its borders to receive tourists from around the world for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
