Chile added more than 2,000 cases of coronavirus for the second consecutive day

Chile registered this Saturday for the second consecutive day more than 2,000 infections of coronavirus, a figure that had not been seen since the middle of last July, at the same time that the positivity rate in PCR tests approached 3% after three months with the pandemic under control.

The number of cases in the last 24 hours was 2,056, raising the total number of infected to more than 1.68 million, while the rate of positivity nationwide was 2.95%.

From the Ministry of Health they reported that the number of newly infected has increased by 35% in the last seven days and by 80% in the comparison to 14 days respectively.

Three weeks ago and coinciding with the lifting of restrictions, the pandemic, which had been under control since August, began to rebound slightly.

The worsening is still not reflected in the number of deaths, which were 11 in the last day, but it is in the number of active cases, which means that they can infect, which amounted to 9,570, one of the highest figures in three months .

The country has deployed one of the most successful vaccination strategies in the world, reaching 89.4% of the target population with the complete scheme, mostly with the Chinese Sinovac vaccine, but also Pfizer, AstraZeneca and CanSino.

In parallel, more than 4.4 million booster doses have been administered to the elderly and other groups that completed their vaccination earlier, and more than 70% of children between 6 and 17 years old have received their first dose of the vaccine.

The country now enjoys more freedoms than ever, without quarantines throughout the country and with active bars, restaurants, cinemas and sports centers.

The borders, which were closed to travelers for six months, were opened on October 1, although only for vaccinated tourists.
