Russia exceeds 230,000 deaths from coronavirus after touching the record of daily deaths

The health authorities of Russia have notified this Sunday that the country has exceeded the threshold of 230,000 deaths from coronavirus after verifying more than 35,000 new cases and more than a thousand deaths in the last 24 hours, very close to the record set the day before.

The national operational center for the fight against coronavirus has confirmed 35,660 new cases and 1,072 associated deaths in the last day, only three less than on Saturday, for a total of 8.2 million cases and 230,600 deaths.

Most of the new positives were detected in the capital, Moscow (5,279), in Saint Petersburg (3,297) and in the province of Moscow (3,030), according to figures collected by the official Russian news agency Sputnik.

This past Saturday, the governor of Saint Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, decreed the closure of non-essential restaurants, cafes and shops from October 30 to November 7, given the situation of the pandemic.

“From October 30 to November 7, the operation of retail facilities is prohibited, and the operation of restaurants is suspended, except for takeout and home food”, according to the note published on the official website of the city administration.

Previously, on Thursday, the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobianin, decreed ten holidays between October 28 and November 7, in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus. Thus, he supported the proposal of the president, Vladimir Putin, who has advocated adopting similar measures throughout the country.

To date, about a third of the Russian population has the complete guideline, while several polls show that more than half of Russians do not plan to be vaccinated, a situation that has been blamed by the authorities as one of the causes of the spread of the virus.
