Venezuela elections 2021: European Union observers “have behaved up to the task,” says Maduro

The president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, said this Sunday that observers of the European Union that accompany the elections of mayors and governors “have behaved up to the task.”

“Until today they have behaved up to the task, respecting the Constitution and the laws, I hope it will be so until the end of their oversight mission, I hope it is so, I really wish it, sincerely”, said the president after voting in Caracas.

The presence of European observers in an election in Venezuela, the first in 15 years, has drawn criticism from spokespersons for Chavismo, and in fact Mature He warned on the eve of the elections that the EU is not empowered to give a “verdict” of the process.

“All international escorts must respect the laws of Venezuela, and must strictly respect the regulations of the electoral power that invited them ”, the president insisted.

Earlier, the head of the European Union’s electoral mission, Isabel Santos, said that everything was going “quietly” on election day.

21 million of the 30 million inhabitants were summoned to the elections, which also marks the return of the bulk of the opposition to the electoral process, to choose 23 governors and 335 mayors.

The ruling Chavismo won the mayoralty of Caracas and 20 of the 23 governorates, according to official results.
