Guatemala prohibits entry of travelers from eight African countries by omicron variant

Guatemala will restrict the entry to its territory of travelers arriving from South Africa, where a new variant of covid-19 was discovered, in addition to six other countries in southern Africa and Egypt (north), the government reported this Friday.

The restriction will be applied at all borders for people who have stayed “in the last 14 days” prior to their arrival in Guatemala in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Eswatini and Egypt, the Ministry of Health later indicated. .

Guatemalans, resident foreigners, members of the diplomatic corps and aircraft crew may enter by presenting a vaccination card or negative PCR test for covid, although they will have to serve 10 days of quarantine if they were in any of the eight African countries in the last two weeks, added the wallet.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared on Friday that the B.1.1.529 strain of the coronavirus, first reported by South Africa on November 24, is a “worrisome” variant, and christened it omicron.

Last April, Guatemala issued an entry ban for travelers from Brazil, the United Kingdom and South Africa due to an increase in coronavirus infections. The measure was voided six months later.

With about 17 million inhabitants, Guatemala has accumulated since March 2020 more than 617,000 cases of covid-19 and about 16,000 deaths. In the last 24 hours, the authorities reported 483 new infections and 13 deaths.
