Lasso accuses the indigenous leader of generating anarchy in Ecuador, calling him a fascist

The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, accused on Tuesday the indigenous leader Leonidas Iza, with whom he held negotiations after the October protests against the rise in fuel prices, of wanting to sow “an atmosphere of anarchy” in the South American nation.

The president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (Conaie) in turn called the Conservative president a “fascist” and a “liar”.

“He is an anarchist, he is not a democrat (…) he wants to create an atmosphere of anarchy” in the country, Lasso said in a dialogue with journalists.

“Mr. Leonidas Iza must be confronted with the Constitution and with the law in hand, clearly telling him that these anarchic attitudes contravene” legal provisions, said the governor, adding that the indigenous leader is dissatisfied with the attention to the claims of his sector .

On the occasion of an indigenous act, Iza replied: “President of the republic, don’t have that fascist attitude. That simply shows the inability to solve the problems of Ecuadorians. “

Lasso and the head of Conaie met in November to defuse a social crisis triggered by increases in fuel, with protests that left 37 arrested and eight police officers injured.

The Lasso administration had decreed an increase of up to 12%, taking the price of diesel from 1.69 to 1.90 dollars per gallon (3.8 liters) and that of regular gasoline from 2.50 to 2.55 dollars.

After the negotiation, the Executive promised to analyze the proposal of the indigenous movement to lower the price of diesel to $ 1.50 and common gasoline to $ 2.10.

Iza urged Lasso to “honor his word because so far the only thing he has shown in this country is lie after lie.”

Since 2020 the value of fuels in Ecuador has progressively increased by 90%.

The president said Tuesday that he has “open arms, outstretched hand” to talk with social organizations and seek agreements.

The opposition Conaie -which participated in riots that overthrew three leaders between 1997 and 2005- announced that from next January it will resume permanent protests to demand the reduction of fuels.

Lasso announced that he will use “all public force” so that “those who want to anarchy this country, interrupt public services and deepen an economic crisis already affected by the pandemic end up with their bones in jail.”

The indigenous people, who in October 2019 also led demonstrations that left eleven dead, demand an end to the exploitation of natural resources in the areas where they live, a point on which there is also no agreement with the government.

“We are going to fight against any form of privatization, against any imposition by the International Monetary Fund,” Iza said.
