Covid | This is Costochondritis, a painful symptom caused by Omicron

Many symptoms have been attributed to the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Recently, it has been mentioned that costochondritis could be a symptom that affects some patients infected with the virus.

It is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum, that is, to the chest bone. In addition, this pain can sometimes be accompanied by , which is known as Tietze syndrome.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the pain of costochondritis can be very similar to the pain associated with heart disease, lung disease, gastrointestinal problems and osteoarthritis.

Although there is no laboratory test to confirm a diagnosis of this pathology, some tests can help clarify the concept, such as computerized or magnetic resonance imaging to rule out other diseases.

Although the pain caused by this inflammation in the cartilage that connects the ribs to the sternum may suggest a risk situation, this condition is usually “harmless” and “it goes away on its own after two or three days”.

Some other symptoms that also often occur with costochondritis include: pain on the left side of the breastbone, sharp, stabbing pain that feels like pressure, pain that affects more than one rib, and pain that worsens when you take a deep breath or cough .
