Nuclear Stimulus Act: LFI and Greens take over Constitutional Council

The wise men fought again. LFI MPs and environmentalists announced on Monday that they have filed an appeal with the Constitutional Council to challenge the nuclear power resurgence bill, finally passed by Parliament on May 16.

The two groups condemn “in particular” in this law “the removal of the goal of reducing the share of nuclear energy to 50% by 2035 and the removal of the ceiling on the total permitted capacity for the production of electricity from nuclear sources.” 63.2 gigawatts.”

In their appeal, Insumis and Werts argue that these two measures are contrary to “the constitutional requirements for clarity and sincerity of debate” and see them as “a violation of Article 7 of the Environmental Charter, concerning public participation in the development of public decisions affecting the environment.” During the semi-cycle debate, both groups criticized the fact that these two provisions accelerate the passage of a future law on multi-year energy programming, which is expected this summer at best.

Almost 400 deputies are in favor

MPs from the LFI and the Greens also criticize the “criminalization of environmental activists and organizations” with tougher penalties for breaking into power plants. They also consider it “unlawful” to deviate from the urban planning code for the construction of nuclear reactors near existing sites.

The bill was widely supported by 399 votes to 100 in the Palais Bourbon, with a coalition of votes from the presidential camp, LR, RN and the communists, while the PS abstained. The LFI and environmental groups are the only ones who voted against this nuclear resurrection text in the National Assembly.

The Constitutional Council has one month to make a decision.
