Diego Elías won, but was left out of the semifinal of the PSA World Tour Squash Finals

Diego Elías is the maximum Peruvian exponent in Squash and currently occupies the fifth place in the world ranking, for which he played the CIB PSA World Tour Finals 2021-22. The contest that brings together the eight best athletes has been taking place successfully since this week in Egypt and our representative had a great role, although he could not advance to the semifinals.

The championship started with a group stage and the Peruvian flag-bearer athlete was placed in Zone A, where he lost 2-1 to the Egyptian Ali Farag (No. 1 of the PSA) and 2-0 against the English Mohamed ElShorbagy (No. 3 of the PSA), in the first two dates. After these results, the national racket player was left without options to reach at least second place in the table, which gives access to the semifinals.

However, Diego Elías still had a pending confrontation and jumped onto the field this Friday, to measure forces with the Egyptian Mazen Hesham (No. 8 of the PSA), who was also eliminated. Despite the negative circumstances, the Peruvian showed off his talent and won 2-0, with runs of 11-5 and 12-10.

After obtaining the victory, the national athlete added five points and finished in third place in Group A of the CIB PSA World Tour Finals 2021-22, behind Ali Farag and Mohamed ElShorbagy. It is worth mentioning that in Zone B, those who qualified for the semifinals were: the New Zealander Paul Coll and the Egyptian Mostafa Asal, located in second and fourth place respectively in the PSA world ranking.

After the meeting, Diego Elías referred to his participation in the contest. “He was out, he had nothing to lose and nothing to gain. He was just playing squash, because he wanted to finish the season with a win. Now I feel a little better, but at the same time a little disappointed for this week”, confessed the athlete.

I’m happy to win the last game and I can’t wait to be home. These last few months I have been with my big bag, traveling everywhere, playing many tournaments and matches. I am very happy to finish the season and return home. I’ll be playing in Colombia, so I have to go there, compete and then put my racket away for a few weeks.”, concluded the Peruvian.
