Jhegson Méndez, one of the starters in Gustavo Alfaro’s team, will miss the next game of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. In the 57th minute of Ecuador vs. Netherlands, the player who wears the number 20 on his back saw the yellow card, the second of the tournament. Consequently, by accumulation, he was suspended to face Senegal.

The South American representative sought to make the difference on the scoreboard and approached goalkeeper Andries Noppert’s goal. However, the cast led by Louis Van Gaal managed to get the ball back and tried to respond with a fast counterattack with Memphis Depay.

The Barcelona man received the ball from behind and as he was getting ready to turn, Mendez left his place on the pitch to go for the Dutch winger. In that participation, the 25-year-old midfielder hit his opponent from behind and knocked him down. But, the actions continued and there was an arrest for a new offense.

Despite this, referee Mustapha Ghorbal had already scored the plate for the Ecuadorian. Then, while the commitment was paused, the Algerian judge approached the Los Angeles FC athlete from the United States to show him the yellow card, the first that the African referee showed in the duel.

Although, for Méndez, it is the second he saw in the World Cup. In the debut against Qatar, the former Independiente del Valle was the protagonist of a reckless tackle for which he was sanctioned with a yellow card. So, the ‘Tricolor’ footballer will be one of the confirmed casualties to close the group round.

Ecuador and Senegal will face each other on Tuesday, November 29, starting at 10 am (time in Peruvian and Ecuadorian territories) to conclude the action of group A. In parallel, the Netherlands will face the host of the competition.
