‘His legacy will never be forgotten’: Kylian Mbappe pays tribute to King Pele

“Rest in peace King.” Moments after the announcement of his death, Kylian Mbappe paid tribute to King Pele. “The king of football has left us, but his legacy will never be forgotten,” he tweeted in English. According to him, the Paris Saint-Germain striker slips a photo of him next to the three-time World Cup winner with Brazil, in black and white.

During the World Cup in Qatar, the Blues’ No. 10 showed his support for Pele, whose health was deteriorating. “Pray for the king,” he wrote in a tweet posted Dec. 3.

The two football prodigies first met in Paris in 2019. “He is an idol, an absolute legend. Pele is strength and elegance, I was inspired by him and continue to be inspired by him,” said the young 20-year-old world champion from France with a smile on his face.

Mbappe and Pele were able to chat for about forty minutes in one of the private rooms of the Parisian Hotel Lutetia. A moment of exchange in French and English that ended with the handover of shirts: the Parisian offered his club kit and the Brazilian a replica of the Selesão tunic with his famous number 10 on the back.
