Statements by Juan Reynoso

The coach of Peru, Juan Reynoso, assured this Friday that the match on September 7 against Paraguay for the first date of the South American qualifiers will be very close and tight.

“Against Paraguay it will be a very close and tight game,” Reynoso said at a press conference after summoning 28 players from the local tournament for the start of the qualifiers against Paraguay and Brazil.

“We are waiting for the best Paraguay, one that misses going to the World Cups and that plays at home against a direct rival, like us,” said the coach who replaces Argentine Ricardo Gareca.

“We aim to win 50% of points on this double date. We are ambitious in these qualifiers,” he added.

Reynoso summoned 28 players who are active in local soccer for the matches with Paraguay and Brazil on September 7 and 12 for the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-organized by Mexico, Canada, and the United States

The midfielders, Yoshimar Yotún from Sporting Cristal and Christian Cueva from Alianza Lima stand out on the first list.

Players who play abroad will be called up at the end of the month.

The Italian-Peruvian striker Gianluca Lapadula will be out for these two games due to injury.

The competition will grant six and a half places to South America for the next World Cup, which will go from 32 participants to 48.

The Inca team will start the pre-world cup by visiting Paraguay at the Antonio Aranda stadium in Ciudad del Este on September 7 and five days later they will receive Brazil at the National Stadium in Lima.

The team that finishes in the seventh position of the South American qualifier will play the intercontinental play-off, in March 2026.
