google photos will display RAW images in the app’s main feed, even if the RAW image folder does not have backups enabled.

The pixel phones and some Android devices have an option to enable RAW + JPEG capture in the camera app. This feature creates a RAW folder on the device to store these files, which by default has backups disabled to avoid taking up too much space.

In this sense, by not making backup copies of this folder, files are not stored in the cloud and, therefore, RAW images do not appear in the main tab of the Google Photos ‘app’.

However, this Google video and image storage service claims to display RAW images in your main ‘feed’, regardless of backup status of the folder that stores them on the smartphone. This has been collected by 9to5Google after reviewing the code of version 6.20 of Google Photos.

In addition, as they have been able to verify in this specialized portal, even if the backup of Google Photos is disabled, RAW images may appear alongside all other images.

Another of the changes that they have observed is that if the user has the backup copy enabled, both in the general photo folder and in the RAW image folder, RAW images will no longer be saved in a separate folder, but all images will be stored together.

However, 9to5Google points out that perhaps this is just a user interface change in the Google Photos folder but, in the file system, the actual RAW folder will not disappear.
