Argentina registers 12,664 new cases and 100 deaths from coronavirus

Argentina counted this Sunday 12,664 new cases of the COVID-19 with which the total number of positives amounted to 8,589,879, while deaths rose to 122,684, after 100 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

The figures mark a significant decrease compared to the infections reported on Saturday, when 21,836 positives were reported, although on weekends the number is usually lower.

The positivity rate reported on this day for the country as a whole was 32.8%, since 38,494 tests were carried out throughout the national territory.

According to official figures, there are 8.1 million people who were infected and have been discharged, while the number of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of the coronavirus who remain admitted to intensive care units is 2,597, below the maximum peak of 7,969 on June 14.

The percentage of bed occupancy in intensive care units for all types of pathologies is 48.7% at the national level and 45.7% if only Buenos Aires and its outskirts are considered.

The Argentine government relaxed most of the health restrictions in October, including the total opening of borders, although the cases began to rise from November and took on a dizzying pace in the last weeks of December, giving rise to a “third wave” of the covid-19.

For this reason, since January 1, the mandatory use of the health pass was imposed, which will require proof of complete vaccination schemes to be able to attend activities considered to be of “epidemiological risk”, such as massive events outdoors or in closed spaces, as well as in long-distance transport.

Argentina, with some 45 million inhabitants, continues with its vaccination campaign against the coronavirus that began at the end of 2020.

The latest official data indicates that so far 89 million doses have been applied and another 97.3 million distributed, of which more than 5 million were donated.

At least 39.8 million people received the first dose of the vaccine, while 35.3 million were already inoculated with the second.

Likewise, more than 3 million Argentines have received an additional dose (when the initial immune response is probably insufficient) and another 10.8 million received a booster dose or third dose, within the framework of the vaccination strategy initiated in October to strengthen the immunity of various groups.
