Petro had a “very friendly conversation” with Biden about the diplomatic relationship between Colombia and the United States

The elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petroassured this Tuesday that he had a “very friendly conversation” with the president of the United States, Joe Bidenabout the diplomatic relationship between the two countries, without giving more details about the issues discussed in the call.

“On the path of a more intense and normal diplomatic relationship, I have now had a very friendly conversation with President Biden of the United States. In his words, a ‘more egalitarian’ relationship for the benefit of the two peoples”expressed Petro on his Twitter account.

In his first speech after winning the elections last Sunday, Petro emphasized that he would propose that the countries of Latin America unite to talk with the United States and lay the foundations for an “energy transition” in the face of the ravages caused by climate change.

On the other hand, the president-elect, who will take office on August 7 to replace Iván Duque, had already discussed the peace process and climate change with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, who congratulated him on his election and assured that he wants to “strengthen” the relationship with his government.

“We look forward to working with the president-elect Petro to further strengthen the relationship between the United States and Colombia, and lead our nations towards a better future,” the Secretary of State said in a statement.
