“Argentina regrets and expresses its deep concern about the political crisis that the sister Republic of Peru is going through,” said the Argentine Foreign Ministry in a message posted on Twitter.

The government of Alberto Fernández (Peronist) also made “a call to all political and social actors to protect democratic institutions, the rule of law and constitutional order.”

Despite the fact that Argentina currently chairs the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), there has been no comment on the matter from that sphere.

Castillo resolved this Wednesday to temporarily dissolve the Peruvian Congress and establish a national emergency government, hours before Parliament debated a vacancy motion (removal) against him that could have removed him from the head of state.

In a message to the nation, Castillo also announced his decision to “convene as soon as possible elections for a new Congress with constituent powers to draft a new Constitution within a period of no more than nine months.”

He also ordered a nationwide curfew starting this Wednesday from 10:00 p.m. local time (03:00 GMT on Thursday) and that “it declares a reorganization of the judicial system, the Judiciary, the Public Ministry, the National Board of Justice and the Constitutional Court”.
