Brazilian police find text that would allow Bolsonaro to interfere in elections

The Federal Police of Brazil found in the house of a former minister of the former president Jair Bolsonaro the draft of a decree that would have allowed the far-right leader to try to change the result of the elections, the Folha de São Paulo newspaper revealed on Thursday.

The document was found two days ago during searches of the residence of the former Minister of Justice Anderson Torreswho has an arrest warrant for his alleged responsibility in the attacks carried out by thousands of Bolsonaristas against the offices of the Presidency, Parliament and the supreme court.

The text, according to the newspaper, was a draft decree that would allow Bolsonaro to establish the “defense state”, a regime of exception, with the aim of intervening the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and reverse the result of the elections.

In the elections on October 30, Bolsonaro obtained 49.1% of the votes, compared to 50.9% of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvabut so far it has not acknowledged defeat, although it has not prevented the transition of power either.

Bolsonaro’s most radical supporters attacked the headquarters of the three powers last Sunday, causing enormous damage to the three palaces, with the declared aim of overthrowing Lula, who took power on January 1.

Former Minister Torres is being investigated by the Supreme Court for his alleged responsibility for not having stopped the attacks, as Secretary of Public Security in the regional government of Brasilia, a position he assumed on January 2.

That same day, Torres was removed from office by Governor Ibaneis Rochaanother ally of Bolsonaro, who in turn, was separated from the Government of the Brazilian capital for ninety days.

Currently, Torres is in the United States, but has advanced his intention to return to Brazil to appear before Justice.

Lula, who decreed the federal intervention in the area of ​​public security in Brasilia, affirmed this Thursday that members of the Police and the Armed Forces were colluding with the coup acts.

The attacks by the Bolsonaristas, who had been camped for two months outside the barracks, have left some 1,500 people detained in Brasilia and have opened a series of investigations against politicians and businessmen accused of financing them.
