Spain: Far-right measures against abortion in the region provoke a clash with the Government

The measures to reduce abortions in the region Spanish of Castile and Leonwhere conservatives govern in coalition with the extreme righthave caused a strong clash with the left-wing national government, which warns of resorting to legal measures to stop them.

Castilla y León, the largest region in the country although with a small population, some 2.4 million inhabitants, and aging, is governed by the conservative People’s Party (PP) in coalition with the far-right formation voxin the first regional government in Spain with the extreme right.

The regional government maintains a pulse with the national that make up the socialist party PSOE and the left-wing formation Unidas Podemos, which has warned Castile Y Lion with going to Justice considering that these measures go against the Spanish legislation on abortion.

Castilla y León, for its part, accuses the central government of trying to invade its powers, since Health in Spain is managed by the regions.

Vox assures that it is an answer “pro-life” Front of “leftist abortion agenda”, while the PP argues that they are not measures “anti-abortionists” but in “birth support”.

The President of the Government of Spain, the socialist Pedro Sanchezhas declared that it will maintain its policies to continue the “progress” for the benefit of women, without allowing “not a single setback” in their rights.

Feminist and pro-abortion associations have also criticized these measures, considering that they violate the rights of women, for involving coercion in their decision to voluntarily terminate the pregnancy.

The clash coincides with the processing in the Spanish Parliament of an abortion law that eliminates the mandatory three-day reflection period before undergoing an abortion and the usual practice of delivering an envelope with information on the resources to which the woman who is going to abort, as maternity aid, in addition to the fact that public institutions will not be able to support pro-life associations.

The future law eliminates the obligation of parental consent for minors under 16 and 17 years of age to terminate a pregnancy, facilitates access to the latest generation contraceptives and seeks affective sexual education in schools, among other reforms to protect the sexual and reproductive rights of the woman preventing abortion objecting physicians from participating in clinical committees that decide whether or not to continue pregnancies after 22 weeks.
