LOOK: United States: three and a half years in prison for a police officer involved in the death of George Floyd

The African American died in Minneapolis at the end of May 2020 after being suffocated during an irregular police intervention in which four agents participated, including Thao. The main culprit was agent Derek Chauvin, who knocked Floyd out of the air for nine minutes on the ground using his knee.

Two other officers collaborated with Chauvin by neutralizing the man. Thao, meanwhile, served as a “human trafficking cone” preventing people who came to the scene from intervening. Among them was a person trained to provide first aid and who could have saved Floyd’s life.

Thao’s actions were even more unreasonable in light of the fact that he had a duty to intervene to stop the excessive use of force by the other officers and was trained to provide medical assistance.”, said the judge in charge.

The sentence handed down by Judge Cahill was higher than that requested by the prosecution because the magistrate did not identify any signs of remorse in Thao. The former agent is the only one of the four defendants who pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Thao was already serving a previous federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights, so this new sentence will be served in parallel.

With the verdict against Thao, the cycle of legal proceedings against Floyd’s executioners is closed.
