“If the engine of the Amazon is increasingly illegal and represents a crime against humanity, how do we defend life? With reasons, but also with weapons”said Petroat the IV presidential summit of the Organization of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACTO), which is held in the Brazilian city of belem.

Petro indicated that this environmental court would serve to “judge the crimes” against the largest tropical forest on the planet, “acknowledging the rights” of the biome, which in recent years has seen the expansion of drug trafficking networks in its territory, as well as deforestation, illegal mining and violence against indigenous people, among other crimes.

He recalled that this idea of establishing a “environmental justice court” He already heard it from the former Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) at a global level, but what he proposes is to limit it to Amazonian countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.

He also opted to sign a “military treaty” in the Amazon area with the establishment of a block similar to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and thus confront the “crimes” that occur in the territory.

The Colombian president also advocated promoting a “joint scientific research center” in which scientists from the eight countries of the ACTO investigate the tropical forest.

In addition, Petro raised the flag again against the use of fossil energiesas coal, oil and gaswith veiled criticism of the progressive rulers who defend this type of project, even in the Amazon.

Without the Amazon jungle we will go to the United States in exodus because, what are the peoples going to do without water? They leave, it is logicalhe expressed.

“Is it possible to maintain a political line of that level? whatBet on death and destroy life? Or should we consider something different, which is what I call a decarbonized society?he asked himself.

In your opinion, “if the jungle produces oil”the governments of the region “will be killing humanity” because the ecosystem will stop being a “sponge” of carbon dioxide.

In this sense, he warned that today “it’s not enough anymore” achieve the goal ofzero deforestation” to absorb all the emissions that are released into the atmosphere.

The solution is to leave oil, coal and gas”, he reiterated.

This is the IV. meeting of rulers of the ACTOcreated in 1995 and made up of the eight Amazonian countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela), and the first since 2009.
