María Corina Machado: European Union says that its disqualification “undermines” democracy and the rule of law

O European Union (EU) guaranteed this Monday that the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) of Venezuela to ratify the disqualification of the main anti-Chavista leader, Maria Corina Machadoand two-time presidential candidate Henrique Capriles “undermines” democracy and rule of law.

“Decisions aimed at preventing opposition members from exercising their fundamental political rights can only undermine democracy and the rule of law,” declared the spokesperson for the high representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrellis a statement.

He added that the EU is “Very concerned about recent events in Venezuela and the ratification by the Supreme Court of the disqualification of opposition politicians Maria Corina Machado and Henrique Capriles in the next Presidential elections”.

“The EU calls for the full implementation of the Barbados Agreement and the continuation of an inclusive dialogue process that can lead to fair and competitive elections in 2024. We therefore welcome the decision of the parties in the negotiation process led by Venezuela stay in negotiation table”, said the spokesperson.

The TSJ Political-Administrative Chamber ratified this Friday the administrative measures – both lasting 15 years – against the two-time presidential champion Henry Capriles it’s from Axwhich on October 22 swept the primaries organized by Democratic Unitary Platform with 92.35% of the votes.
