Biden fears China will use its internet-connected vehicles to cause problems in the US

The US Government will investigate the risks to its national security that vehicles connected to the Internet may pose, particularly those coming from China, as reported by the US President this Thursday. Joe Bidenand the Department of Commerce.

The investigation could lead to a ban on the sale of this type of Chinese vehicles in U.S for fear that Chinese authorities They may use cars to spy or cause problems on the country’s roads.

“It doesn’t take much imagination to think like a foreign government with access to connected vehicles “This could pose a serious risk to both our national security and the privacy of American citizens,” declared in a statement the Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimundo.

President Biden took direct aim at China, saying in a statement that “China’s policies could flood” the US market with its vehicles, “posing risks” to US national security.

I won’t let this happen on my watch.“Biden assured.

The president compared vehicles connected to cell phones, which can collect sensitive information from both citizens and the country “and send that information to the People’s Republic of China”.

Biden also highlighted that China restricts the sale of vehicles manufactured in the United States in its market, which is why he does not consider it fair for Chinese connected cars to have “unlimited” access to the North American market.

The announcement of the investigation comes a few days after the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AMA)which brings together the American manufacturing sector, published a report in which it warned that the arrival in the United States of Chinese brand vehicles produced in Mexico would be “catastrophic” for the automobile sector.

The AMA asked the U.S. the development of tools to prevent their import.

Since the Presidency of the United States, the donald trump (2017-2021) a 25% tariff on the import of Chinese cars, which is in addition to the general tariff of 2.5%, making the sale of these vehicles in the country economically unviable.

But several analysts have warned that Chinese companies like BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle maker, will eventually find a way to sell their products in the United States.
