VIDEO. “I hope she recovers”: the British are in shock after the news of Kate Middleton’s cancer

From Windsor to London, the news sent shock waves across the United Kingdom. On Saturday, Britons were still struggling to digest the previous day’s announcement that Princess Kate had cancer. The hugely popular wife of the heir to the throne spoke on camera, calling for respect for her privacy, after weeks of rumors and wild speculation about her health. The British royal family finds itself in an unprecedented situation where two of its most important members, the king and future queen, are battling cancer. 75-year-old Charles III learned in early February that he had the disease. On Friday night, Kate revealed her cancer story herself in a video. Neither the king nor the princess specified what kind of cancer they had.

The word “shock” appeared on the front pages of several British newspapers on Saturday. The press adores Kate and considers her an exemplary member of the monarchy. “Kate, you are not alone,” writes The Sun tabloid. The Times echoes the princess’s optimistic words: “I can get through this,” read the newspaper’s headlines. Kate’s health and the silence surrounding her long recovery from abdominal surgery in mid-January has sparked all sorts of rumors, especially on social media. “Internet trolls who rejoice in the princess’s misfortunes should be ashamed,” says the Telegraph. According to Nathaniel Taylor, a 24-year-old Briton, some people have “gone too far in making up stories” about the princess. “I hope people look in the mirror and think,” he added. “I’m glad she spoke out. (…) The rumors will subside and she will be able to relax with her family. She deserves to have a place to do that,” says Linda Bobi during a visit to Windsor Castle, west of London.
