El Salvador adds 25 extensions to the emergency regime after Congressional approval

The Congress of The Saviorwith a pro-government majority, extended on Tuesday for the twenty-fifth time an emergency regime that suspends constitutional guarantees to combat gangs.

With 67 votes from the official party New ideas (NI) and its allies, Congress gave the green light to the extension for another 30 days, without prior discussion.

The initiative sent by the Government’s Council of Ministers indicates that the measure left at least 79,211 arrests of people accused by the authorities of being gang members or collaborators of the so-called ‘maras‘.
