Why is Discord so questioned in Brazil?

Investigations by the Federal and Civil Police of Brazil indicate that the platform discord — which enables online chat and video streaming, and is popular for gaming and podcasting — is increasingly being used to commit crimes against teens.

Criminals have used the application to blackmail girls, commit sexual abuse, assault and mutilation, according to what was reported by TV Globo’s Fantástico program on Sunday the 25th. One of the defendants was arrested in April by the Federal Police. There are reports of at least ten victims of the attacker. Some of them had the author’s nickname etched on their bodies with a blade, according to the report.

Investigations by the Civil Police and the São Paulo Public Ministry (MPSP) also discovered several folders with photos and videos of girls who were raped and blackmailed on the computers of the defendants. One of the folders was labeled “Backup Rapeable Sluts.”

Among the victims is a 13-year-old girl who ran away from her home in Joinville (SC) last year to meet a man she met through Discord. She ended up in a house in São Paulo with other teenagers. There she was forced to consume drugs and was abused by different aggressors for two weeks.

”At first they just talked, they said that he was her friend, that she could go there, that it would be great, that there would be no adults to bother her. He sent her a travel app from here for her to go on it. And at the end of the first day he forced her to have sex. After that, they went to another house. When they got there, they drugged her and forced her to have sex again. And they beat her, they cut her”a sister of the victim told Fantastic.

Discord talks about ‘zero tolerance policy’ for activities harmful to society

In a note to the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, signed by Discord’s head of security, Clint Smith, Discord claimed that, “in Brazil, 99.9% of Discord communities have never violated our policies” and what exists “a zero tolerance policy towards activities on our platform that are potentially harmful to society”.

The platform claims that it removed “98% of the communities we identified in the last six months for showing child abuse material in Brazil”. “Currently, more than 15% of our staff is focused on security, which means we have more people working in security than in marketing”. Smith also considered that the platform has sought alliances with entities linked to child safety in the country to stop abuse.
