Vaclav Klaus, former president of the Czech Republic, caught the coronavirus, his spokesperson said on Tuesday. Ironically, the former leader had distinguished himself in recent months by his opposition to barrier gestures and restrictive measures.

“He was not feeling well and tested positive for Covid this afternoon,” Institute spokesperson Vaclav Klaus said on Tuesday. “He underwent an examination and was kept at home for treatment. “

“We are fed up with restrictions”

President from 2003 to 2013, Vaclav Klaus has appeared in public several times without a mask since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. In January, the 79-year-old man was fined 10,000 crowns (387 euros) for not having respected the mandatory wearing of a mask.

At the same time, the ex-president delivered a speech during a rally against health measures. “We have had enough of the restrictions and instructions that spoil our lives,” he said at the time. He also vigorously criticized the coronavirus vaccination campaign.

The Czech Republic currently leads the world statistics regarding the spread of Covid-19. The country has the highest rate of new infections per 100,000 population over 14 days. It comes second, behind Slovakia, for the death rate.
