In an interview with Le Point magazine after his two-day visit to Italy and the Vatican, Macron commented on the details of his meeting on Monday with Pope Francis, with whom he spoke about the war in Ukraine, but also about the situation in the Caucasus, Middle East and Africa.

“I have encouraged Pope Francis to call Vladimir Putin and Patriarch Kirill, but also Joe Biden. We need the United States to sit at the table to favor the peace process in Ukraine”, Macron said in the interview.

The Frenchman is convinced that the main figure of the Catholic Church can influence Biden, with whom he has “a true relationship of trust”.

In the third meeting between the Pope and Macron since he became president, the French head of state referred to the need to also establish a religious dialogue and the role that the Catholic Church can play in this conflict.

The day before, at the interreligious summit in Rome, Macron insisted that peace “it will be possible” when Ukraine decides.

“At some point, depending on how things develop and when the Ukrainian people and their leaders have decided, on the terms they have decided, peace will be built with the other, who today is the enemy, around a table. ”, said.

Pope Francis has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine since its inception, on February 24, and has tried to maintain an open diplomatic dialogue with Moscow and its Church, which is in line with the Kremlin’s nationalist position.
