The US says it “has not received” any official request from Brazil about the situation of Bolsonaro

USA “has not received an official request” from the Brazilian government about the former president Jair Bolsonaro after his followers stormed the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday.

“So far we have not received any official request from the Brazilian government related to Bolsonaro,” Sullivan told reporters in Mexico, where he accompanied the president Joe Biden to a summit of North American leaders. “Of course, if we receive such requests, we will treat them as we always do, we will treat them seriously,” he added.

On Sunday, thousands of supporters of the far-right ex-president, who lost the elections to the leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stormed the headquarters of government, the Supreme Court and Congress.

Hours later Bolsonarowho is in Florida, estimated on Twitter: “peaceful demonstrations, within the law, are part of democracy. However, vandalism and invasions of public buildings such as those that occurred today, as well as those carried out by the left in 2013 and 2017, are beyond the rule”.

Sullivan did not comment on Bolsonaro’s whereabouts.

“As far as I know, we are not in direct contact with Bolsonaroso I definitely can’t speak about his whereabouts.”he limited himself to saying.

President Biden reacted to the riots, describing them as “scandalous” and this Monday he condemned them again, along with his Mexican counterpart Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Two years ago, supporters of former US President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington in an attempt to prevent Biden’s victory from being certified at the polls.

Sullivan affirmed that Biden intends to speak with Lula soon but for now it is not known when.
