Mexican Foreign Minister points to his country as the “main ally” of the US against fentanyl

The Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrardassured this Wednesday that his country is the “main ally” of USA in the fight against fentanylone day before a meeting with officials of the Government of Joe Biden.

During the event, he pointed out the text, the chancellor “advanced that the priority for Mexico is to stop US arms trafficking to reduce the firepower of criminal organizations and have more security in our communities”.

The visit of the Mexican foreign minister comes two days after the US indicated that it will reinforce its strategy against the consumption and trafficking of fentanyla drug produced by Mexican cartels from precursors from China.

In recent weeks, various voices in the Democratic administration have opined that Mexico should do more in the fight against fentanyl and organized crime, while the Republican opposition has gone further and has called for a military intervention in Mexican territory.

The meeting is also part of weeks of criticism and cross statements with the neighboring country about the fight against this synthetic drug.

The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorhas responded that the opioid overdose crisis is a public health issue that USA must resolve and has even denied that fentanyl is manufactured in his country, arguing that this substance reaches North America from Asia.

The US ensures that fentanyl seizures at the border increased by 31% last year and that almost 4,000 people were brought to justice for trafficking in this substance, according to figures provided by the White House.

In his 2024 budget bill, Biden has asked Congress for $46.1 billion for his anti-drug strategy.
