Sweden has implemented the agreement with Türkiye to join NATO, says Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenbergassured this Sunday in Istanbul that Sweden has implemented everything agreed with Türkiye to be able to enter the NATO In the next weeks.

At a press conference after meeting the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoganthe secretary general said in reference to an early entry of the Scandinavian country into the Alliance that “we are still in time to achieve it at the summit of the allies” in Vilnius next July 11 and 12.

Since then Sweden has amended its constitution, strengthened anti-terrorism legislation, lifted its arms embargo. Now it is so easy to export military equipment from Sweden to Türkiye like any other NATO ally”, specified the secretary general.

Finland joined NATO at the beginning of April, while neighboring Sweden is still waiting for the go-ahead from Turkey and Hungary.

To advance Sweden’s entry into NATO, representatives of Turkey, Finland and Sweden will meet on June 12, Stoltenberg added.

Finland and Sweden, both located in the north of Europe and until now neutral countries, requested their entry into the Atlantic Alliance last year as a reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
