The Indigenous Movement of Ecuador ratifies mobilization against Guillermo Lasso

The indigenous movement of Ecuador ratified this Friday the mobilization and “resistance” against the government of the conservative Guillermo Lasso, and described as a hoax the freezing of the price of gasoline that the president announced this Friday, with the aim of disarming the social protest.

Leonidas Iza, president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie), after a meeting of the expanded Council of that group in the Andean city of Colta, ratified the day of mobilizations for next Tuesday.

The indigenous leader reported that the Conaie has decided to ratify the mobilization in the face of what he described as a mockery of the Government with the announcement that it would freeze fuel prices, because what it has done – according to it – is to generate a new increase.

President Lasso announced today that the monthly fuel increase, in force since July last year, when the then president Lenin Moreno applied the measure rejected by the majority of social organizations.

Lasso, who succeeded Moreno in power since last May and had assured that he would maintain the measure, renounced that strategy and set a new price that will remain frozen.

“As of today, the monthly increases in fuel prices are suspended and the price of extra (regular) gasoline is set at $ 2.55 and the price of diesel (…) at $ 1.90”, announced the president.

The price of a gallon (3.79 liters) of extra gasoline had already increased on October 12, by virtue of the application of the decree, and climbed to 2.50 dollars, while diesel reached 1 on that date. , $ 69.

For this reason, Conaie has described Lasso’s adjustment as a second increase in less than ten days, since it represents 10 percent more than the one that entered into force on October 12.

Because, “We declare ourselves in resistance starting on Tuesday, October 26”, Iza remarked that he called all social organizations to unity, especially unions, with which he is part of the so-called People’s Parliament, an alternative forum for debate among popular groups.

“We reject, we condemn the new increase in the price of fuels”, He added and highlighted the demand for the repeal of all the decrees that imply an increase in gasoline prices and that allow the privatization of State companies.

Iza, upon reading the resolutions of the expanded Council of Conaie, also demanded the repeal of some decrees that facilitate the expansion of extractive activities (oil and mining) in the ancestral territories of indigenous peoples, and without prior consultation with those peoples, as established by the Constitution of the country.

Finally, Iza assured that the Conaie has resolved to declare a “Exception status” in the territories of their communities, where “Criminals will not be tolerated”, to which indigenous justice will be applied, but neither to the public force (police or military) “To intimidate our bases.”

For his part, the coordinator of the Pachakutik movement, Marlon Santi, in that same meeting, ruled out an eventual division between the political arm and Conaie, as various media linked to power have tried to position.

Pachakutik is a movement created “To defend the rights of all social organizations” and that is why it also raises the freezing of fuel prices, added Santi.

However, he said it was a surprise that President Lasso, instead of accepting the suggestion, rather raised the value of gasoline.

For this reason, the political leader ratified the mission of his organization to “fight with the people, fight with the grassroots “, as well as to oppose in the National Assembly (Parliament) any law that proposes the setback of social rights.
